First shoot - 13th December 2009

Me and Antony have captured a bulk of raw footage for the teaser trailer we used the seasonal lighting conditions to gather shots which would slowly become darker and darker. we used the camera in handheld mode to capture point of view shots and make the camera footage more realistic. Were yet to capture more footage such as the scene with the police barrier tape which is one of the most important shots in the teaser. It reveals to the audience that the two protaganists are going somewhere they shouldn't. For our shoot we didn't use the original location of Tockholes woods we used the memorial woods in Great Harwood which provided us with some great shots. We may still use the initial location of Tockholes for our other footage which we will be filming immediately after the Christmas holiday.

Research Brand image and promotion

Our group is aiming to promote an image that our film actually did happen. Similar to the promotion of the films The forth kind and The blair witch project. In our teaser we will use a lot of point of view shots and handheld shots to promote the idea that the film was filmed naturally without a tripod. We will use a tripod for our establishing shots and steady shots which are not from one of the characters pers
pective. In our advertising we need to try and promote the idea of realism further the tag-lines of these kind of promotional posters are sometimes what makes them realistic.
The forth kind - Based on actual case studies.

The blair witch - In october 1994 three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Mary land whist shooting a documentary..
.
a years later their footage was found.

Quarantine remake of spanish film REC - On march 11, 2008 the government Sealed of an apartment complex in Los angeles. The Residents w
ere never seen again
No Details,
No Witnesses,
No evidence.
Until now
All three films have a similar element during filming the films are partially if not completely filmed with hand held cameras this method is very good in creating a realistic image such as Cloverfield, REC, Quarantine and even Paranormal activity. We are going to implement this technique in our teaser to gain the full effect of realism.

Prop preparation - Costume

Clothing
Because we want to create the feeling of realism we are going to wear the clothes that we normally would on a daily basis the props have also been thought of in this context we wont have any possessions a normal teenager wouldn't such as weaponry or complex technology.
Props

Props
I briefly touched on the props we will be using in production preparation but these may still change during filming:
  • Police barrier tape
  • Torches
  • Mobile phone
  • Tent
  • Beer bottles
  • Edited newspaper
  • Fake blood ( Recipe below)
Cast:
  • Adam Armstrong
  • Antony Eadson
  • Threat (Enigma)
Possible locations:
  • Tockholes woods
  • Witton Park
  • Corporation Park
Because we want our project to be filmed in woodland area we are limited to the areas in which we will be able to do our filming above is our current choice of location of Tockholes woods and other possible locations where we could do our filming around the local area.

Editing tech + Filming equipment
  • Final cut express software
  • Apple mac
  • Tripod
  • Cannon filming camera
  • Photoshop

Prop preparation (Blood)

We realised that if we are going to successfully create a teaser trailer for a horror film we are more than likely going to need to use blood at some point during the filming i found the recipe for fake blood on.

http://www.halloween-website.com/fake_blood.htm

To make our fake blood we will need:
  • Clear Corn Syrup
  • Red Food Coloring
  • Milk - will help to make the blood appear thicker and darker.
The recipe itself is very simple the products must be combined into a bowl adding the red food coloring until were satisfied.

Representation

The characters that will appear in our teaser trailer are the two protagonists thats go into the woods initially. These are normal teenagers in everyday clothes. This idea adds to the realism of the story line. Also there will be several secondary characters who will play the roles of the evil presences in the woods. These characters wont be seen in full focus so you will be able to make out their physical form. The ideas is to have them as shadows or blurred characters that are seen in quick shots now and then throughout the trailer.

The societies view of teenagers are that they are trouble makes and always finding ways to get into danger or create danger for other people. In this case we wish to defend this view of the teenagers today as they two main protagonists will be dressed in everyday clothing doing nothing wrong except in the society however stumbling into trouble in the woods through no fault of their own and having to over come the events that this leads into on their own. We wont be creating any particular stereotypes in this teaser trailers. Media commonly use stereotypes to help the audience create their own ideas of the characters through the ways that society views them today. This is very successful as it becomes more personal to the audience as people have different views.
Water Lippman created a theory of stereotypes and the 4 functions of them.
These are,
  • An ordering process
  • A short cut
  • An expression of our values and belief
  • A map of the world.

Shooting organization and safety.

I have created a shooting schedule to help us organize when we will film our shoots what props we will use, date, time and who will be involved during the shoot. Below is my shooting schedule sheet.
I also filled out a risk assessment sheet to ensure the safety and professionalism of our group our shooting will consist of the woodland area of Tockholes so the sheet has been filled out accordingly assessing the risks of the woodland area. Below is my completed risk assessment sheet.

Audience Questionnaire

As part of our research we decided to create a questionnaire in order to discover more information about what the audience think about horror trailers. In our questionnaire we created questions that we thought would give us more of an insight into the genre and what the audience think about it. These are the questions we placed on our questionnaire:

  • Do you like Horror films ?

Yes / No

  • Has a trailer for a film ever made you want to watch it

Yes / No

  • How often do you watch horror films

Always Often Occasionally Rarely Very rarely

  • Do you like horror films to feel realistic

Yes / No

  • What is your favorite Horror trailer?

  • Where do you tend to watch movie trailers for horror films?

At Home The cinema The internet Mobile

Other…

(Insert an example of a filled in questionnaire here)

Having had ten of our questionnaires completed we have found some interesting facts. Ten out of ten of ten people answered 'yes' that they do like horror films. This shows that with the liking of horror films being there we can then appeal this product to the audience knowing it is a genre that they will like. The second question also proved 100% positive as ten people answered 'yes' that a trailer has made you watch a film. This is important as it shows by watching the trailer it leads to people wanting to watch the actual film. The most common answers for the third question were that people tend to watch horror films often and sometimes occasionally. These were the only chosen answers for this question. This reflects the genre as some people may find it hard to watch horror films all the time and keep a straight mind. We also asked people what their favorite horror trailer was. We had quite a range of answers for this question but the film that appeared most was '28 days later'. In our final question we asked the audience where they tend to watch movie trailers. We found that we had missed one obvious option for seeing trailers which was on the tv. This is for big money movies made in hollywood. Overall our audience questionnaire showed us that there is a very large market for horror movies and trailers. We also found that people take quite a large interest in them as they liked to be pushed to the limits in terms of how scared they really are. All the favorite trailers were big money hollywood films which normally have tv advertising.
