Ancillary Task: Magazine Research

Ancillary task Poster Research

I have researched various horror movies by different production studios a common convention on most posters is how they have the production company names such as FOX SEARCHLIGHT in capitals as well as who is starring in the production. These posters often also show when the release date of the film will be, this is not always the exact date they can be ambiguous times such as "This summer", "This winter" or even just Coming soon or "2010" Below are a few examples of Horror movie posters i have researched to help me in the production of my prelim task.

Ups and Downs of movie promotion

There are issues we will have to take into account when we are making our movie posters. Some issues in advertising have caused major catastrophies one of the worst I have found during research goes under the heading of 2012 Movie Promotions Making Kids Commit Suicide? found on the website. http://wlmalmborg.blogspot.com/2009/10/2012-movie-promotions-making-kids.html. This is a very extreme issue, It also enraged various religious groups who were angered by the fact the film proted an athesist opinion about how doomsday will happen . It is unlikely our promotions would offend but it needs to be taken into consideration whist making my poster and the magazine.

film poster research

I have researched lots of different film posters to give me an idea of how to produce one for our film. The main aim of the film poster is to draw the viewers attention and entice them to watch the film. Film posters play a vital role in advertising a film as they can be seen in many places for example on billboards, the sides of buses, pus stops, magazines, newspapers and many more. The poster has to be eye catching and doesn't need to have any actual footage of the film on it. It can be a full theatrical poster where there is lots of information such as, the director, stars, reviews, awards, opening dates, dvd releases dates, the film production company and many more.
Other types can be teaser posters where they have v
ery little information and revolve round the graphics. I am planning to make a full theatrical poster because these have more information that entice the viewers.
The imagery in the poster is vital as this can help show the conventions of that certain genre so the viewers know what to expect when watching the film and also if this genre of film is one that would appeal to them.
The images of posters that i am going to include all
at
tracted my attention for being very creative and a
lso depicting what the genre could be.
There is a mix of teaser posters and also theatrical
posters.

Ancillary tasks - Poster research

I have been researching about film posters. These are what a film company will release in order to promote the film to get more people to go and see it. They have a big affect and role in bringing in viewers and supporting the brand image of the film. They use the features that fit with the genre of the film to really sell the film. For the big companies this is quite a large factor in the film making process and it is normally the big holly wood companies who create these. I have looked at a few example of posters for films from the horror genre and have took inspiration from them in order to create my own. These are the all posters that i found and thought were very effective in their purpose of to sell the film. The first poster i looked at was from the film 'The Exorcist'. The thing that really caught my eye about this poster was the quote at the top, "Most terrifying movie of all time". This stands out and gives across a strong message, causing people to want to watch the film, as they think it will be like nothing they have seen before. The next poster I looked at was from the film 'An American Haunting' This film uses a mixture of mysterious colors as well as using the key words of, "possession knows no bounds" This plays of the mind of the viewer think and maybe be scared already before even seeing the film. The final poster I looked at was from he film, 'The evil dead'. This is a very theatrical poster which includes lots of information about the film. The picture of someone being sucked into the ground and reaching for help really sells the film, as it gives a sense of scariness and uniqueness about the film. This makes the public want to see it and experience something they have never done before.

Editing

I am currently editing the footage that we gathered in December by adding different effects I am experimenting which colours and style to set the appropriate tone for our teaser. We want the audience to be confused about what is happening in the trailer the short clips and colour distortion i am hoping will create some enigmas.

Ancillary tasks- Magazine cover research

 - I have previously researched various ways in which film companies promote thee products through the medium of poster advertisements but another way films are promoted are through different film magazines such as Total film magazine and Empire. The magazines show the brand image and tease the readers into being interested about the film the most anticipated films are usually the ones that star on the front cover this is because the magazine wants to best promote a film that the reader would like to know about. For the big magazine companies it is a rarity that Indie or british films have the spotlight this is because the consumer usually prefers to see a top priced hollywood movie on the cover of the magazine. More recently the most common films to find on the front covers of these magazines are superhero films inspired by the old Marvel and DC comics Such as Ironman, Batman, Spiderman and Transformers this is likely because these magazines satisfy a age range spanning from young children, teens and adults. Below are some examples of Total Film magazine and Empire promoting the superhero films.
